What Is Dulce de Leche?

(Image: Chez Pim/Flickr)

Story takes place at 8:30AM, Wednesday morning….

Customer: Oh My! That smells wonderful…

Me: Well of course it does, come get a fresh, healthy made right in front of you delicious crepe!

Customer: Do you have any sweet breakfast crêpes?

Me: We have a wide assortment of crepes, what’s your guilty pleasure?

Customer: OH MY! You have Dulce de Leche on your crêpes?

Me: Well, of course, you can get that with bananas and/or strawberries, powdered sugar, and fresh whipped cream.

Customer: Oooooooooo! and you have Nutella…. I think I’m in heaven.

Me: Wait till you try it and you’ll feel like you’ve died and gone to heaven…

Customer: Ok you’ve won… One Triple Threat with Nutella and Dulce de Leche… STAT!

This completes the story time section of this post:-D

Dulce de Leche or confiture de lait…. can’t really explain how delicious this creamy milk-based sauce really is. It is found as both a syrup and a caramel candy, it is prepared by slowly heating sweetened milk to create a product that is vaguely similar in taste to caramel. This deliughtful dessert can be found in an assortment of classic desserts in the Argentine, Paraguayan, Chilean, Peruvian and Uruguayan cuisine.

The most basic recipe demands for slowly simmering milk and sugar, stirring almost constantly, although other ingredients may be included. As most of the water in the milk evaporates the mix will begin to thicken; resulting in the fabulous dulce de leche. The transformation that occurs in preparation is often called caramelization.

These are just sublime inside crêpes… ;-) Hint! Hint!

Absolutely delish!

What Is Nutella?

(Image: p3nnylan3/Flickr)

Its amazing to see the excitement on some peoples faces when they come across our crêpe cart and see our BIG jars of Nutella® sitting on display.

It’s as if its 5 am Christmas morning, your 5 years old and just found that Santa had just left your house and filled the christmas tree full of toys for you and your siblings!

And then…… you have some people who have never tried the delicious, sweet hazelnut spread at all.

I know can you believe that, poor unfortunate people!  They have no idea what they’re missing out on!

Some think of it as the closest to heaven one can get…. hmmmm……… I think they may be right! ;-)

Living in France at 12 years old Nutella® smothered on a fresh, warm, baguette was the closest me and my siblings got to heaven!

Let me educate those that have been living under a rock and do not now what this heavenly chocolate is.

Let’s start off by how it’s pronounced  “new-tell-uh” just like that!  Say it all with me now… “New-Tell-Uh.”  Its not Nut-Tell-Uh…. my uncle whom I love so much.

Nutella® is a creamy chocolate spread made from the combination of roasted hazelnuts, skim milk and a hint of cocoa.  Another important aspect is that Nutella® has no artificial colors or preservatives.

I think I am forgetting to let you all know a little secret….

That Nutella® can be spread on just about anything like: fresh bakery breads, bagels, english muffins, waffles, toast, croissants, crêpes and last but not least les droites….. aka…… the fingers. :-)

So if you find yourself to be one of those that have not tasted the delectable sensational Nutella® spread stop what your doing and come try some.

I promise you won’t be disappointed!

History of Crêpes

Crêpes play a big role in traditional French cuisine.  The best way to describe a crêpe is a very thin pancakes made of wheat flour.  Crêpes were originated in in the west of France, in a region called Brittany.  Since the beginning crêpes have started to become popular in France, throughout Europe, Asia, and now the US. Crêpes are predominately served in street and carnival arenas as well as playing a part in menus, being served as appetizers, main courses, side dishes, and desserts.

The beauty in crêpes is that it allows you to insert your favorite toppings, making them either sweet (crêpes sucrées) or savory (crêpes salées).   From various savory fillings like cheese, ham, asparagus, mushrooms, artichokes, eggs, spinach, and various meat products to sweet fillings like Nutella, sugar, dulce de leche, maple syrup, fruit spreads, sliced fruits, and whipped cream.

The possibilities are endless!
